Mission

Science education project was set up in year 2000 at Library of Tibetan Works & Archives, with the primary goal to create a standardized and sustainable modern science curriculum for the Tibetan monasteries. The need for introducing western science into the Tibetan monastic system is an inspiration that came directly from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His desire to introduce science subjects is not based on introducing a new knowledge, but rather a new way of investigating things which will be an add-on to the already present long tradition of investigation and contemplation.

Science being knowledge in search for truth has shown certain affinities with philosophy of Buddhism since the beginning of twentieth century, and various different meetings and dialogue are held between Buddhist scholars and scientists at different levels, be it in investigation of mind or correlation of emptiness to the scientific theory of relativity. Therefore our effort would help to generate firmer and deep rooted faith in the teachings of the Buddha, thus contributing to further the preservation and dissemination of Buddha-dharma.

Also to the new generation of Tibetans and general audience, Buddhist teachings could be more valid, practical and easily comprehensible if we are able to present the views of both Buddhism and modern science.

Science is knowledge based upon empirical evidence and made a lot of progress in the last century generally lacks a proper direction and ethics, which can be complemented from the teachings of Buddha. Thus this project can also become as a platform for exchange of knowledge between various investigative traditions in the world.
